Common signs of stress and overwork on your business

Business is risky and can sometimes trigger stress, which may be caused by the fear of failure after seeing things fall apart or not knowing how to face and overcome difficult situations.

Given the choice between living and working, some entrepreneurs find that living is harder than working. Although long working hours do not necessarily cause harm on their own, negative consequences can arise when endless work begins to affect health or relationships.

Put simply, hard work is necessary for every business to succeed, but overworking is counterproductive.

Without rest or some form of downtime, weaknesses tend to increase while strengths diminish. Whenever an entrepreneur finds himself or herself overwhelmed by negative comments from friends and family about nonstop work habits, or if one or more of the following symptoms appear, it is probably time to step back and assess the situation:

  • irritability or a short temper, especially during simple everyday situations such as waiting in line or being stuck in traffic,
  • severe headaches,
  • sleep disturbances, insomnia, or constant tiredness,
  • behaviour that is out of character, including emotional numbness,
  • increased use of drugs, alcohol, caffeine, or cigarettes,
  • illness, particularly during weekends or holidays,
  • constant stomach upset,
  • low morale,
  • teeth grinding,
  • inability to relax or working endlessly without appearing tired,
  • feeling that relaxation is a waste of time or feeling anxious about being away from work, the phone, or a computer,
  • constantly missing family gatherings or social engagements,
  • sudden weight loss or gain,
  • lingering flu or colds, and/or
  • forgetfulness.

Do not struggle through a business start-up in a state of denial. If left untreated, the buildup of stress that causes these symptoms can lead to more serious conditions, including depression, cardiovascular disease, muscular and skeletal disorders, ulcers, skin problems, allergies, the worsening of illnesses such as diabetes and arthritis, and even cancer. No business dream is worth sacrificing your health for.

Final Thoughts:

As an entrepreneur, you should avoid excessive stress because business involves risks and things do not always go as expected. You should prepare yourself mentally and spiritually to overcome fear and manage stress effectively. Whenever problems arise, do not give up. Instead, carefully investigate the situation first and then take reasonable measures to solve it.
